Multiple Myeloma/Amyloidosis Cancer Survivor
Brenda Gregory

Nelson Mandela said “courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.” Brenda Gregory was 54 years old in 1998 and had recently relocated to Arizona to be near her two grandsons when she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. A second diagnosis of amyloidosis, a related blood cancer, followed three short months later. Brenda’s first feelings upon hearing her diagnosis were shock and anxiety. She didn’t know anything about multiple myeloma, and after some research, she admits she “went straight to FEAR.”

Multiple myeloma isn’t easy to diagnose and Brenda’s case was no exception. Six months later, Brenda’s kidneys showed signs of damage, and her oncologist recommended a bone marrow transplant. Brenda received two opinions to ensure she was given the best guidance about her diagnosis, and finally decided to travel to Los Angeles for a recommended bone marrow transplant.

While in Los Angeles, Brenda learned about The Wellness Community. She discovered that TWC offered all the support she desperately needed and asked if there was a location in Phoenix. She was given the names of the people founding The Wellness Community in Arizona and contacted them. Almost a year later she got the call that TWC-AZ was opening, and the multiple myeloma networking group was one of the first groups to be offered.

Brenda has a unique understanding of the value of TWC-AZ’s services. She and her sister spent many hours and considerable resources seeking out the support and information TWC-AZ provides today. Now, Brenda doesn’t have to spend the time and energy locating these necessary resources; she finds it all at TWC-AZ. She believes that the free programs allow her to feel unlimited in her exploration of new information.

Brenda is an inspirational example of triumph over fear. She has been in complete remission for over twelve years.
